Matt Jones

A2 Business Studies, History and Law are my A Level courses.

Other activities include Student Union Presidency at Newcastle-under-Lyme College, Young Enterprise business consultancy and following Stoke City.

I make no secret of aspiring to enter the upper echelons of national politics in the future, but I endeavour to complete a degree in Management and run my own company beforehand.

Why are you a Conservative? I think it’s fair to say that there are many reasons why I joined the party. Put simply, however, I believe that the policies of the party are based around common sense and as a result are the best policies for the country. Despite the fact that the surrounding areas of my home town, Newcastle-under-Lyme, are very much Labour constituencies (Stoke-on-Trent), I’ve never felt the need to just go along with what people around me say or do. In truth, we are a country in decline and this must be halted. The modern Conservative Party has the key qualities required in order to make the United Kingdom an all-round better place to live.

Who is your favourite Conservative of all time? My support – or should that be defence? – of Margaret Thatcher in the face of continual criticism from peers brings a smile to my (and fortunately their) faces. Saying that, however, my History course at college is very much politics-focussed – from around the beginning of the 20th Century to the mid 1950’s. You have to grin at the circumstances surrounding Stanley Baldwin’s ascension, and a special mention to Lord Curzon, too. He sounded like a bit of a character.

Best part of NKCF? Though many would say the same, it has to be meeting new people and going to new places. I could never imagine meeting such a diverse and interesting range of people in any other organisation or association. There is something special about NKCF that brings people together who, being honest, you wouldn’t normally see spending time together. You have people from every walk of life in NKCF, and it’s a pleasure to spend time with them all. As a college student is has opened my eyes to university life and I’ve spent many hours (already!) on the Keele University campus having a laugh (and a drink or two).
