Why are you a Conservative? It was never the natural political party for me to join, I come from a very deprived area which is a Labour strong hold, and both my parents are ardent Labour supporters. However I did not see why just because of the place I come from, as proud as I am of my home town, I should automatically vote Labour. I joined the Conservative party because I believe they are the best party to make Britain safer, more prosperous and proud. I don’t agree with Labour’s micro management of our public services and I don’t like what Labour has done to our Constitution and how our country is now governed. I chose the Conservative Party, and I’ve gotten a fair amount of grief for that from friends and family because of it, but if you believe in common sense government, personal freedom and fair play, which I do, the Conservative Party is the only sane choice.
Who is your Favourite Conservative of all time? If I have to choose it would have to be Margaret Thatcher, not necessarily because of what she did, more because of her personality…not since the war has there been a more charismatic Conservative who main concern was making Britain a great nation again and would crush anyone who got in her way, a remarkable personality regardless of whether or not you agree with her policies. Edward Heath is not my favourite but a very interesting personality, the huge sulk he had from the day he was defeated by Thatcher in the 1975 leadership election required a great deal of bitterness and commitment which he kept till the very end. There is a valuable lesson to be learned by all people interested or involved in politics from Ted Heath.
Best part of NKCF? I met most of my new friends in NKCF, joining up and regularly attending the socials and meetings was probably the best decision I made as a Fresher. The reason I kept on coming was because everyone was so friendly and really sociable, it was really the opposite of what I expected from a political youth group. It’s hard to pick a best part of NKCF; but I do enjoy the debates we have at our meetings. Although we are all members of the same party there are still many different view points, from people who would describe themselves as right wing and the more progressive members. It always makes for an interesting discussion and I believe is healthy for our group to be so at ease with the differences that exist, but all have the same core beliefs and all be good friends afterwards.
