Clarissa Hemmingsen

Clarissa was elected Deputy Chairman Membership in May 2007, having previously held the Society Secretary role during the 2005-6 academic year.

She was elected in abstentia as she completed a year of Study Abroad studying Political Science at York University in Toronto, Canada, and is now into her third year of International Relations at Keele University and hopes to pursue a Masters soon after.

Clarissa, originally from the Isle of Man, is a fanatical follower of all things science fiction and when not at the Union or out with CF she can be found either tucked away in her house in Silverdale blogging or at the cinema in Newcastle. As well as engaging in Union politics and having spent the majority of her University life sitting on various councils, she is also a part time member of Keele Drama Society.

Clarissa is hoping to aid CF in leaping from strength to strength in the coming year.

Why are you a Conservative? I've always believed that the Conservative Party held the right balance of beliefs from social responsibility to the bettering of what have become laughable public systems. The Conservative Party have a long-held policy of giving power back into the hands of the people instead of hoarding it in central government, and that is exactly why I think it is a necessity for the Conservatives to regain their place in Parliament once more. I don't agree with everything the modern Conservative Party does, but I believe that such principles of social justice and environmentalism that mark the Party are what makes it something worth fighting for.

Who is your favourite Conservative of all time? I'd have to say William Hague. Although it wasn't the right time for his leadership in the past, the passion, charisma and dedication he exudes are qualities I think members of the Party can really learn from, and he's a fantastic public speaker!

Best part of NKCF? The social side is definitely the best part for me. In NKCF you make such a tight-knit network of friends, and it isn't all about politics! We frequently go out to clubs and bars in Newcastle, to the cinema, and to other social events and we're always open to new event suggestions!
